Why SKU Selection Can Make or Break an AS/RS Business Case

An analysis in Logistics Viewpoints argues that the business case for automated storage and retrieval systems hinges less on storage density than on which SKUs go inside. Because a small share of high-velocity SKUs generates most order lines, picks, and replenishments, automating those A-items turns every retrieval into eliminated walking, searching, and labor — savings that compound quickly over a year. Filling an AS/RS with slow movers, by contrast, consumes valuable automated capacity while adding little throughput, a common reason automation ROI falls short of projections.
