Blocked Fire Lane, Five-Figure Fine: Warehouse Fire Exit Management That Actually Works
A blocked fire lane in a warehouse starts at five figures once citations land. OSHA's 2026 maximum penalties run $16,550 per serious violation and $165,514 per willful or repeat violation, with $16,550 per day for failure to abate — and the local fire marshal fines separately. Warehouse operations manager Chen Feng walks through a real inspection morning, the four scenarios that always block fire lanes (peak overflow, 'temporary' staging, parked forklifts, over-stacking under sprinklers), the daily inspection sheet his building runs now with one owner per check, and the five-step playbook for responding to a citation: classification, abatement date, the 15-working-day contest window, documented fixes, and negotiating the penalty down. Includes a copy-ready inspection table and the counterintuitive lesson: the most expensive part of fire lane management isn't paint or signage — it's discipline on the day you're bursting at the seams.
