'Drawn-out' peak shipping season appears to be winding down: US retailers

The National Retail Federation says US imports are "likely past the busiest part of the year," with its latest Global Port Tracker projecting August as the top month for containerized cargo arrivals in 2026. Retailers front-loaded inventory amid tariff expectations, stretching the peak season into a drawn-out early climax. A typical fall cooldown should now ease capacity and rate pressure for shippers.

Customs updates add a 'compliance burden' to potentially volatile Q4 for shippers

Maersk warns that new customs requirements in the US, Mexico and Europe are coinciding with post-Golden Week volume rebounds and seasonal disruption, creating a tougher Q4 for shippers. US Customs is voiding importer-of-record numbers with incomplete identity data and has opened a limited IEEPA tariff-refund process; Mexico now mandates electronic valuation filings (MVE), while the EU's revised Union Customs Code moves toward a centralized Customs Data Hub. Maersk also shifted four Asia–Europe services back via the Suez Canal and notes air freight remains tight on semiconductor and data-center lanes.

Heavy imports put strain on skilled labor supply in LA-LB

Marine terminals in Southern California are struggling to provide enough dockworkers trained to operate complex machinery as a strong peak shipping season extends well into October. The shortage of skilled labor for cranes and other terminal equipment could slow cargo handling at the nation's busiest container port complex — shippers routing through LA-LB should build buffer into pickup and drayage plans.

Peak season runs long as AI demand and port congestion keep capacity tight

Peak season is stretching longer than usual this year: AI hardware demand is lifting airfreight volumes while port congestion and weather disruptions keep capacity tight. Forwarder Dimerco recommends booking early on high-demand corridors, seeking alternative sailings, and building buffer time into schedules. Shippers that wait risk scarcer space and higher rates late in the season.

Airfreight rates edge up in September

TAC Index data shows airfreight rates edged higher in September as the Q4 peak season approached: average Hong Kong–North America rates rose to $7.02/kg from $6.98 in August, while Hong Kong–Europe climbed from $4.58 to $4.80, up 31% and 8.8% year on year. The gains reflect early peak-season inventory builds, jet fuel prices up over 100% year on year amid the US–Iran conflict, and buoyant AI-infrastructure cargo to the US. Early-October data shows the rally accelerating, with the Baltic Air Freight Index up 5% in a week and 25.5% year on year.

Peak season pressure to develop unevenly across origins and cargo types

Air cargo demand is set to rebound as factories reopen after the Golden Week holiday, but growth will be uneven across origins and cargo types, according to CH Robinson. Technology-related cargo such as servers and semiconductors remains the strongest driver on transpacific routes, boosted by new consumer-device launches. E-commerce, a key demand driver in recent years, is expected to play a smaller role this peak season due to tariff changes in the US and Europe.

Ocean congestion and tariffs could see more Q4 air cargo volumes

Air cargo could benefit from shippers switching off congested ocean services in the fourth quarter, plus further spill-over once tariff direction becomes clearer, Dimerco predicted in its October Asia Pacific Freight Report. Held-back China-US shipments may flip to air under time pressure, tightening capacity further. AI, semiconductor and year-end retail demand are already keeping several Northeast Asian origins tight and rates under upward pressure.
