It's the email from the ocean carrier saying your sailing got blanked, or your box got rolled to the next vessel. It's like booking a dinner party and the guests cancel — but the kitchen already cooked everything. Your warehouse has the receiving appointment booked, the labor scheduled, and the freight? Still floating out there somewhere, or sitting at a different port entirely.

Growing backlog of empty containers hurting LA-LB port fluidity: HTA

Empty containers that are not being repositioned back to Asia are piling up at the LA-LB gateway, and the Harbor Trucking Association says the backlog is hurting fluidity at the busiest US port complex. Marine terminals counter that the situation is being managed capably. No post-peak easing at US container gateways, despite drayage woes

Elevated import volumes are straining drayage capacity at US container gateways, with Houston handling record cargo and local drayage rates up 34% year on year versus an 18% national average. Descartes reported US containerized imports up 10.3% YoY in September, and the national drayage demand index is running 18% above the past six months. This year's peak season has stretched longer than usual as shippers front-loaded cargo amid tariff uncertainty, while drivers shifting to longhaul work has worsened the drayage squeeze.
