Growing backlog of empty containers hurting LA-LB port fluidity: HTA

Growing backlog of empty containers hurting LA-LB port fluidity: HTA

Empty containers that are not being repositioned back to Asia are piling up at the LA-LB gateway, and the Harbor Trucking Association says the backlog is hurting fluidity at the busiest US port complex. Marine terminals counter that the situation is being managed capably. Lingering empties eat up yard space and slow truck turn times — a cost that tends to surface as pickup delays and extra fees during peak season.

Why Maritime Cybersecurity Is Becoming an Operational Priority

Digitalization is transforming how ships, ports, offshore platforms, and logistics networks operate, with navigation, cargo handling, propulsion, communications, and maintenance increasingly connected. Those links boost efficiency and visibility but also expose maritime operations to ransomware, supply-chain compromise, navigation interference, and attacks on operational technology. Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT concern — it has become an operational priority for ports and carriers, where a single incident can idle terminals and strand cargo.

Port of Savannah Wins Approval for $2.3 Billion Container Terminal

Georgia Ports has secured federal approval for a $2.3 billion container terminal at the Port of Savannah, adding 3.5 million TEUs of annual capacity and cementing its position as a leading U.S. East Coast gateway. The project eases a long-standing East Coast capacity bottleneck. For shippers and 3PLs planning long-term, East Coast warehouse siting and cargo routing can now be planned against materially larger port capacity.

Savannah's new terminal sets 2028 work start following permit approval

Construction of the $2.3 billion Savannah Container Terminal is set to begin in January 2028 after permit approval, with the facility expected to handle the largest container ships once completed in the 2030s. The project significantly expands US East Coast port capacity, and importers should start factoring the new gateway into routing and warehouse network planning.

Cyber-crime group hits 38 shipping and port groups with data leak threat

Cyber extortion group 'n0n' has named 38 shipping and port organisations across 18 countries on its dark-web leak site, suggesting data may have been stolen. SOCRadar believes the listings may point to a shared point of entry — such as an EDI or integration platform — rather than 38 separate intrusions. The group set a 19 October publication deadline, with ransom demands of $2.4m–$14m in bitcoin.

Despite new record, Port of LA chief warns of tariff-driven planning risk

The Port of Los Angeles moved 1.42 million TEUs in September — its best month ever and the highest monthly volume recorded by any Western Hemisphere port, with loaded imports up 19% year over year. Executive Director Gene Seroka warned that tariffs and sourcing shifts are roiling the trans-Pacific lane, making cargo planning hard for ports and shippers. Record volumes, he said, do not mean certainty.

West African port congestion exposes gaps beyond terminal gates

Container throughput in West Africa jumped 19.4% last year as larger vessels joined Asia–West Africa services, but Drewry warns the region's infrastructure is ill-suited to the boom, with congestion exposing gaps in landside links beyond the terminal gates. Rapid growth plus emerging West Africa–Latin America trade are outpacing investment in port and hinterland capacity. Shippers and carriers planning West Africa services should factor landside bottlenecks into risk assessments.

State loan to aid Louisiana port's new rail connection

Louisiana Economic Development has awarded a $1 million loan under its FastSites program to close a funding gap on a $7 million rail spur linking the Port of Columbia to Union Pacific's main line. The 400-acre inland port in northeast Louisiana sits along the Ouachita River and U.S. Route 165, about 30 miles south of Monroe, and already has state DOTD and federal Delta Regional Authority funding. Port officials say the spur will give regional businesses public access to UP's main line and help attract industrial investment such as Louisiana Green Fuels.

The Port of Los Angeles handled a record 1,042,652 TEUs in September, the busiest month in its 118-year history, capping record quarterly and four-month cargo totals. Loaded imports rose 19% year over year to 545,696 TEUs while empty-container volume hit an all-time monthly high. Executive Director Gene Seroka credited resilient consumer demand, inventory replenishment, and shippers shifting cargo to Los Angeles amid challenges on other trade routes.

War-Diverted Traffic Is Reshaping NEOM's Port. What Happens If Hormuz Reopens?

Windward data shows war-diverted traffic has reshaped Saudi Arabia's Port of NEOM: bulk carrier calls jumped from one to 25 between May and September 2026, with many vessels lingering for weeks as discharged cargo awaits rerouting, while container calls have been zero since mid-July. If Hormuz transits recover, the bulk boom will likely fade quickly; if the security environment persists, the port's new container terminal — expected to open by end-2026 — could begin attracting trial calls.

Container Surge Continues at Port of Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles processed 1,042,652 TEUs in September, the highest single-month volume of any port in the Western Hemisphere and its fourth straight record month. U.S. Container Imports Slow After Stronger-Than-Expected Summer

U.S. container imports are finally cooling after an unusually long peak season, according to NRF's Global Port Tracker. Port call optimisation pilot projects reveal significant emissions savings potential, new report shows

Heavy imports put strain on skilled labor supply in LA-LB

Marine terminals in Southern California are struggling to provide enough dockworkers trained to operate complex machinery as a strong peak shipping season extends well into October. The shortage of skilled labor for cranes and other terminal equipment could slow cargo handling at the nation's busiest container port complex — shippers routing through LA-LB should build buffer into pickup and drayage plans.

DP World plots US port comeback with Corpus Christi container terminal

The Port of Corpus Christi has signed a lease option agreement with Dubai-based DP World to develop a container terminal with capacity of about 1 million TEUs a year, a port official told the American Journal of Transportation. The project would mark DP World’s return to U.S. marine terminal operations two decades after a national-security controversy forced it to divest P&O’s U.S. ports in 2006, and would be its first container terminal on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Corpus Christi, currently not a container port, aims to diversify beyond its energy-heavy cargo base, with DP World to design, build, and operate the facility.

Customs brokers and hauliers in Manila are expected to voluntarily stop work ahead of a three-day trucking strike, with warnings the protest could last a week, after a year-long standoff over carriers failing to remove empty containers. Asia-US container rates rise, could be at peak; liquid chem tanker rates ex-USG tick higher

Asia-US container rates climbed again this week, with West Coast rates at $7,550–8,400/FEU and East Coast at $9,600–12,000/FEU — near mid-2022 highs. Xeneta's Peter Sand says the market has likely reached its post-Iran-war peak, up 344% to the West Coast and 335% to the East Coast since the war began, though he does not expect a collapse: his year-end forecast is $6,000–$7,000/FEU to the East Coast and $4,500–$5,500 to the West. Drewry expects downward pressure as blanked sailings ease and Golden Week curbs cargo volumes, while Freightos warns Far East port congestion — which could take 10 months to fully unwind — will keep costs elevated.

Xeneta chief analyst Peter Sand says the market has likely reached its post-Hormuz-crisis peak but won't collapse, forecasting year-end spot rates of $6,000-$7,000 to the East Coast and $4,500-$5,500 to the West Coast.
