No post-peak easing at US container gateways, despite drayage woes

Elevated import volumes are straining drayage capacity at US container gateways, with Houston handling record cargo and local drayage rates up 34% year on year versus an 18% national average. Descartes reported US containerized imports up 10.3% YoY in September, and the national drayage demand index is running 18% above the past six months. This year's peak season has stretched longer than usual as shippers front-loaded cargo amid tariff uncertainty, while drivers shifting to longhaul work has worsened the drayage squeeze.

Ontario Premier Ford warns U.S. tariffs may outlast Trump

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Oct. 14 that Canada must plan as if U.S. tariffs are permanent, declaring the U.S.-Canada economic relationship 'changed permanently.' His remarks follow Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber, plus 50% levies on a range of Canadian goods. With even Democrats unwilling to guarantee tariff removal, elevated U.S.-Canada trade costs may persist well beyond the Trump administration.

DHL: AI infrastructure boom outweighs tariff policy damage

DHL's latest Globalization Tracker, released October 7 with NYU Stern, shows global goods trade grew faster in the first half of 2026 than in any half-year in the past 15 years, apart from the Covid rebound. Demand for AI infrastructure goods like semiconductors and networking equipment drove 42% of trade growth in 2025, rising to 76% in Q1 2026. U.S. tariffs reached multi-decade highs but had limited global impact, and DHL forecasts goods trade to expand 3.4% per year through 2029.

Despite new record, Port of LA chief warns of tariff-driven planning risk

The Port of Los Angeles moved 1.42 million TEUs in September — its best month ever and the highest monthly volume recorded by any Western Hemisphere port, with loaded imports up 19% year over year. Executive Director Gene Seroka warned that tariffs and sourcing shifts are roiling the trans-Pacific lane, making cargo planning hard for ports and shippers. Record volumes, he said, do not mean certainty.

Sheinbaum says Mexico is addressing Trump’s trade concerns

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Oct. 13 her government is addressing the Trump administration’s concerns about the growing U.S.-Mexico trade deficit by buying more American goods. The goal is a bilateral deal that would cool trade tensions — a welcome signal for U.S. importers and warehouse operators reliant on Mexican supply chains.

Customs updates add a 'compliance burden' to potentially volatile Q4 for shippers

Customs updates add a 'compliance burden' to potentially volatile Q4 for shippers

Maersk warns that new customs requirements in the US, Mexico and Europe are coinciding with post-Golden Week volume rebounds and seasonal disruption, creating a tougher Q4 for shippers. US Customs is voiding importer-of-record numbers with incomplete identity data and has opened a limited IEEPA tariff-refund process; Mexico now mandates electronic valuation filings (MVE), while the EU's revised Union Customs Code moves toward a centralized Customs Data Hub. Maersk also shifted four Asia–Europe services back via the Suez Canal and notes air freight remains tight on semiconductor and data-center lanes.

AI drives global trade as well as air cargo

Demand for goods used to build AI infrastructure, such as semiconductors and data-transmission equipment, has consumed air cargo capacity out of Asia, according to the latest DHL Globalisation Tracker. That same AI-driven demand has helped insulate global trade against tariffs and geopolitical disruption. Carriers expect technology shipments to keep lifting airfreight rates through peak season.

Railcar Market: Fleet Shrinks as Demand Rises (2026 Outlook)

Railcar Market: Fleet Shrinks as Demand Rises (2026 Outlook)

The North American railcar fleet is shrinking even as freight demand strengthens: the industry is on pace to build roughly 25,000 railcars this year while scrapping more than 35,000, a net deficit. Trinity Industries CFO Eric Marchetto says ever-changing tariff policy has frozen capital-expenditure planning, Section 232 steel tariffs have raised hot-rolled coil and plate costs, and Union Tank Car's trade complaint against Mexican-built tank cars could push car prices and lease rates higher. Week 39 combined traffic rose 4.4% year over year. Takeaway for shippers: new-build and lease costs are headed higher into 2026 — lock in rail capacity early.

U.S., EU, 13 countries target excess manufacturing capacity

The United States joined 14 other economies, including the EU, in pledging to confront excess manufacturing capacity and production in certain sectors. The coordinated push, with autos and electric vehicles in focus, signals tougher trade enforcement ahead and possible new trade-remedy actions against overcapacity-driven imports.

Navigating the changing rules of global supply

Navigating the changing rules of global supply

Kearney's Per Kristian Hong told the CSCMP EDGE 2026 conference in Nashville that the operating system of globalization is in transition, with protectionism and neo-mercantilism rewriting the rules of global supply — turning once-open routes like the Strait of Hormuz into conditional access that does not fully reset once tensions cool. He offered six executive strategies: embed geopolitics in strategy, secure critical access, stress-test capital and margins, build regional portfolios, keep technology options open, and set thresholds that turn signals into decisions.

Trade Compliance Can No Longer Operate as a Back-Office Function

Trade Compliance Can No Longer Operate as a Back-Office Function

A Logistics Viewpoints analysis argues trade compliance is no longer a back-office checkpoint but an operating constraint that can approve, block, reroute, delay, or reprice physical supply-chain activity. It calls for embedding controls such as restricted-party screening, classification, export controls, and origin determination at decision points like supplier onboarding, sourcing, and shipment planning, while preserving full audit evidence as automation reduces human review.

Global Trade Management Is Becoming a Real-Time Supply Chain Control System

Global trade management is moving from compliance transaction processing toward real-time supply chain control, Logistics Viewpoints argues. Trade rules — classification, origin, duties, sanctions, export controls — now alter sourcing, routing, inventory and landed cost before goods move. The piece warns that compliance data must reach procurement, planning and finance as operating constraints, and GTM platforms need deep integration with ERP and execution systems to turn shifting trade conditions into controlled responses.

U.S. trailer makers harmed by imports from China, ITC says

The U.S. International Trade Commission determined that domestic trailer manufacturers were injured by imports of van-type trailers and subassemblies from China — the first of three decisions expected this fall. The ruling followed Commerce findings of dumping and subsidies, and related investigations on imports from China, Canada and Mexico are expected to continue into early 2027.
