Trucking employment rising despite fuel, economic headwinds

For-hire motor carriers added jobs year over year in September for the first time in 41 months, as higher pay and an uptick in demand drew more workers. The turnaround suggests trucking capacity may loosen after years of contraction, easing upward pressure on spot rates — though elevated fuel costs and economic uncertainty remain key headwinds.

Suez Canal container ship transits exceed 50% of pre-disruption levels

Weekly container-ship capacity transiting the Suez Canal averaged 753,000 TEU in the first two weeks of October — more than 50% of 2023 levels for the first time since the Houthi attacks began, according to BIMCO citing Clarksons Research. The rebound has accelerated since the Gemini Alliance resumed its Asia–Mediterranean service via the canal on July 6, with 16 services reverting since. BIMCO estimates Suez rerouting had inflated global container-ship demand by about 10%, a boost now fading fast amid rising congestion at Asian ports.

Freight Market Alert: Why October's Tender Rejections Hit 14% Unexpectedly

The SONAR Truckload Rejection Index has climbed to an unexpected 14% in October, well outside normal seasonal patterns. The driver is not a demand surge but persistent supply imbalance: capacity remains insufficient nationwide, with unusual disruption in Los Angeles, Harrisburg, and Atlanta and spot markets under pressure. Shippers and warehouse operators should adjust tender strategy now: secure capacity early and budget flexibly before peak season pushes rates higher.

Airlines move capacity to booming China, Hong Kong outbound markets

Freighter operators are shifting aircraft, schedules and capacity allocations toward China and Hong Kong outbound markets as booking activity surges on trans-Pacific, intra-Asia and Africa routes. The boom signals tightening trans-Pacific airfreight capacity and firmer rates heading into peak season. US importers and forwarders should secure space early rather than gamble on spot availability.

International Q3 sales jump 48% as 2026 overtakes 2025 pace

International Motors' sales of trucks and buses jumped 48% year over year in Q3 2026 to 19,900 vehicles, up 22.8% from the second quarter, parent company Traton Group said Oct. 12 — with 2026 now running ahead of 2025's pace. The Lisle, Illinois-based manufacturer's rebound points to recovering Class 8 demand, a positive signal for carrier fleet expansion, used-truck values, and the broader North American freight cycle.

Cirium predicts nearly 750 new freighters in next 20 years

Cirium's latest Fleet Forecast projects around 747 new freighter deliveries between 2026 and 2045, implying 2% annual growth for the global freighter fleet. E-commerce, high-value goods, time-sensitive logistics and special cargo continue to support dedicated freighter demand. But supply chain bottlenecks, engine availability, extended certification timelines, cost pressures and geopolitical uncertainty are collectively limiting the pace at which new capacity can be added.

Mexico trucker shortages, visa restrictions squeeze cross-border capacity

Cross-border trucking capacity across North America is expected to stay constrained into 2027, TRAFFIX executives told FreightWaves. Driver shortages, regulatory restrictions and rising operating costs are limiting available trucks between the U.S., Mexico and Canada, while higher interest rates and tighter lending are keeping new carriers from entering the market.

No end in sight of the misery for US trucking: 'It's a broken model'

The US trucking market limped through a dismal summer, and analysts expect the misery to continue into next year. Rising rates reflect shrinking capacity rather than healthy demand, while tender rejections soar despite tepid demand — prompting warnings of a structural crisis for the industry. Shippers and warehouses should secure capacity early as volatility keeps pushing transport costs higher.

Maersk North America Market Update — October 2026

Maersk's October North America market update shows North Europe capacity to North America returning to normal this month, but spot space will stay limited — book at least three weeks ahead. TA2 will likely fill as volumes rise, and Canada's East Coast stays tight as low water levels limit cargo per vessel. Mediterranean-to-Houston bookings are now open with a three-week lead time.

Air China Cargo adds 14th 777F

Air China Cargo has taken delivery of its 14th Boeing 777 freighter as it continues to focus on capacity and network growth. The newbuild 777F, registered B-229D, was handed over at Boeing's Everett factory in Washington, US, on 1 October, according to Planespotters. The added capacity strengthens the Beijing-headquartered carrier's freighter offering on key trade lanes.

Cathay Cargo boosts capacity to three US locations and Mexico

Cathay Cargo has added more transpacific freighter capacity between Hong Kong International Airport and Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and Mexico, targeting technology-related shipments during the peak season. The expansion follows a plan announced last month by the carrier's head of cargo hub operations and development to grow transpacific services. US importers and forwarders should watch for extra lift and its effect on rates.

Railcar Market: Fleet Shrinks as Demand Rises (2026 Outlook)

Railcar Market: Fleet Shrinks as Demand Rises (2026 Outlook)

The North American railcar fleet is shrinking even as freight demand strengthens: the industry is on pace to build roughly 25,000 railcars this year while scrapping more than 35,000, a net deficit. Trinity Industries CFO Eric Marchetto says ever-changing tariff policy has frozen capital-expenditure planning, Section 232 steel tariffs have raised hot-rolled coil and plate costs, and Union Tank Car's trade complaint against Mexican-built tank cars could push car prices and lease rates higher. Week 39 combined traffic rose 4.4% year over year. Takeaway for shippers: new-build and lease costs are headed higher into 2026 — lock in rail capacity early.

Transpacific air cargo demand outruns capacity

Airlines and forwarders report strong demand from Asia Pacific to North America, with no slack season this year. DHL Global Forwarding says westbound demand out of Asia grew 12% in June, driven by AI-related hardware like semiconductors and servers as e-commerce momentum cools. Charter services are in high demand to secure lift for the holiday peak, pushing airfreight rates higher.

Peak season runs long as AI demand and port congestion keep capacity tight

Peak season is stretching longer than usual this year: AI hardware demand is lifting airfreight volumes while port congestion and weather disruptions keep capacity tight. Forwarder Dimerco recommends booking early on high-demand corridors, seeking alternative sailings, and building buffer time into schedules. Shippers that wait risk scarcer space and higher rates late in the season.

Trucking Capacity Crisis: Rejections Up 4x on Same Volume

The U.S. truckload market is facing an unprecedented capacity crisis, with carriers rejecting loads at roughly four times the normal rate — around 14%, about three times 2023 levels — even as volumes stay flat. Capacity is exiting the market faster than new trucks can enter, driven by rising costs, driver shortages, and regulatory hurdles. FreightWaves says the market will remain tight; shippers and brokers should watch pricing closely.

Transportation prices surge as capacity tightens further in September

The September Logistics Managers' Index showed transportation prices at 92.7, highly inflationary, while transportation capacity (34.4) contracted for a 10th straight month. Record diesel prices and heightened regulatory enforcement continue to restrict truck capacity, and the overall LMI hit 70.2, the second-highest level in four and a half years. Logistics managers expect the market to remain very tight over the next 12 months.

Capacity conundrum for shippers as carriers unveil post-Golden Week blanks

With China's Golden Week holiday under way, shippers are calculating post-holiday shipping capacity out of Asia. Drewry's Cancelled Sailings tracker shows 39 blanked sailings announced for weeks 41–45 across the three east-west deepsea trades, half of them on the transpacific. Yet Sea-Intelligence notes blanking levels are unseasonally low for the post-pandemic era — a capacity-management strategy that has helped keep transpacific spot rates elevated for two months.

Used truck sales take unexpected dip as inventories tighten

U.S. used Class 8 truck sales fell 8.8% in August to 23,800 units, bucking seasonal trends, while dealer used-retail sales dropped 24% from July, ACT Research reported. Tightening inventory — not weak demand — drove the decline, and average retail prices climbed 11.3% year over year. Fewer new-truck trades are entering the used market, keeping supply tight and prices elevated for carriers looking to add capacity.

Panama Canal to add transit slot on 15 Oct, immediately raise draft restrictions to 49 feet

The Panama Canal Authority will add a daily transit slot on 15 October, raising the total to 33, and has immediately raised the maximum authorized draft for the neopanamax locks to 49 feet from 48.5 feet. The easing follows improved water levels in Gatun Lake, now slightly above the 10-year average. It restores carrying capacity on the primary Asia-US Gulf and East Coast trade lane, where more than 76% of transiting cargo has the US as origin or destination. The Authority is also preparing for a developing El Nino that could squeeze rainfall again in 2027.

Shippers urged to check routings as alliances redraw Asia–S America trade

Maersk and CMA CGM are ending their joint ASAS2/SEAS3 Asia–East Coast South America service, with the last sailing leaving Shanghai on 8 December, and CMA CGM is relaunching its SEAS 2 and SEAS A loops shortly after. The reshuffle redraws the alliance map on a trade the alliances never formally covered: Ocean Alliance is closing ranks while PIL shifts toward a new Hapag-Lloyd-led bloc. Shippers should review December routings now, as capacity shrinks and fallback options disappear.

Xeneta: Shippers want short-term deals as demand squeezes capacity

Global airfreight volumes rose 6% year-on-year in September while capacity grew just 2%, pushing Xeneta's dynamic load factor to 62% and lifting spot rates 27% above last year. With demand outpacing capacity, most shippers are refusing long-term deals: 60% of new Q3 contracts run three months or less versus 25% a year ago, and contracts over 12 months have all but disappeared. Shippers increasingly want floating mechanisms with base rates adjusted to market conditions.

Savannah port project passes 60% complete mark

The Georgia Ports Authority's $1.6 billion redevelopment of Ocean Terminal in Savannah has passed the 60% completion mark, with a new 2,650-foot berth now ready for large container vessels. The project will lift the terminal's annual capacity from 200,000 TEUs to 1.75 million TEUs as part of a 10-year, $5 billion capacity plan. The truck gate, ultimately with 12 inbound and six outbound lanes, is fully operational and linked to I-16 by a $29 million overpass.
