Middle East War Lifts VLCC Rates, Spurs Global Replacement Orders

Escalating conflict in the Middle East is lifting very large crude carrier (VLCC) rates, prompting owners to order fleet renewals and heating up the tanker newbuilding market. Rate volatility will feed into crude and product trade costs — shippers and logistics firms should watch route risks and freight trends closely.

LTL rates hit new high in Q3, moving higher in Q4

Less-than-truckload rates hit a new high in the third quarter and are expected to finish the year even higher, according to the TD Cowen/AFS Freight Index. The LTL rate-per-pound component finished Q3 78.8% above its January 2018 baseline, and is projected to end Q4 at 82.5% above. High diesel prices and strong carrier pricing power are driving the increases, with large carriers like Saia pulling forward general rate increases.

Baltic Dry Index Extends Slide Into 7th Day

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index fell 1.8% to 2,801 points on Tuesday, its seventh straight decline and the lowest since August 20. The capesize index dropped 3.7% to 3,994 points. For importers of iron ore, coal and grain, the slide means cheaper ocean freight — but it also signals soft bulk shipping demand.

Cass: TL linehaul rates up 10% in September, shipment counts remain positive

Cass Information Systems' September data shows truckload linehaul rates rose 10.1% year over year and 0.6% month over month, hitting a four-year high. Shipment counts grew 1.9% — the second straight month of gains after a 42-month downturn. While spot rates seasonally pulled back, the contract-heavy rate market keeps adjusting higher as carriers report an accelerating capacity exodus and a position of strength in bid season.

Strong US import demand will support transpacific rates till new year

Transpacific container rates will stay above Asia-Europe levels as a strong US economy supports import demand, Evergreen general manager Wu Kuang Hui said. He expects the premium on US routes to hold through Lunar New Year 2027. The SCFI showed Shanghai-US east and west coast rates steady at $10,524 and $7,584 per 40ft, while Shanghai-Europe rates fell 3% to $2,274 per teu as vessels return to the Red Sea.

Baltic Dry Index Falls to More Than 7-Week Low

The Baltic Dry Index fell 2.2% to 2,852 on Monday, its lowest level since August 21. The capesize segment, which hauls iron ore and coal, tumbled 4.4% to 4,148, its weakest reading since late July. Panamax and supramax rates edged slightly higher. The decline signals softening demand for bulk commodities and continued pressure on dry-bulk freight rates.

Soaring Tanker Rates Leave Americas Awash in Crude Oil

Soaring freight rates are stifling exports of dense heavy crude from the Americas, leaving cheap barrels stranded even as Asian and European buyers face supply shortages and benchmark prices hold above $100 a barrel. With Venezuela, the U.S. and Canada producing more oil than they consume, the unusual glut has opened a rare split in the global oil market.

Global VLCC Spot Earnings Rise to $805,000/Day, Clarksons Says

Crude tanker markets hit fresh all-time highs, with VLCCs averaging $805,000/day globally and freight at $20-45/bbl (US Gulf-China at $37.5/bbl vs $5/bbl in 2025), Clarksons Research said in its Oct 9 weekly recap. At least 10 ships (1.0m GT) have been damaged in the Middle East in October, and a cumulative ~2 billion barrels of crude have failed to transit Hormuz. The spike is lifting landed costs for importers and straining freight budgets across supply chains.

India and the Widening Tanker Freight Squeeze

Iraqi crude shipments to India more than doubled in September to 4.41 million tonnes while Russian flows fell 32.3%, as Indian refiners including Indian Oil and Reliance switched to FOB purchases and began hiring their own tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. All seven Aframax routes in the benchmark basket are up 28-73% on the week, and Atlantic Suezmax earnings rose 32-38%. With loading at Yanbu recovering after a pipeline outage, tanker availability and voyage costs have moved directly onto refiners' books — a squeeze worth watching for freight budgets.

Dry Bulk Shipping: Capesizes Under Pressure

The Capesize market stayed under pressure through the week, with persistent Atlantic weakness outweighing a gradual Pacific recovery. The 5TC benchmark slipped from $43,833 on Monday to $39,363 by Friday. The Pacific showed greater resilience as fixing activity gathered pace, but brokers see little sign of a broad rebound. Weaker dry bulk rates would directly lower ocean transport costs for bulk commodities.

Why Adding 3PLs Can Backfire on Shippers

Why Adding 3PLs Can Backfire on Shippers

Shippers that spread freight across multiple 3PLs to chase lower rates may get the opposite result, says John Conrad, chief revenue officer of Evans Transportation Services. When too many brokers bid the same lane, carriers spot the competition and hold out for higher rates — a dynamic he calls "broker poker." Conrad argues multiple 3PLs only make sense with a pre-existing trusted relationship in a specific segment, and also weighs in on where AI genuinely helps in managed transportation and where it is oversold.

Oil shipping costs reach dizzying new highs on Hormuz snarls

Hiring a very large crude carrier to move U.S. oil to Asia now costs $77 million, a record high versus a 2025 average of $9.2 million, according to Baltic Exchange data. The Iran war is redrawing Middle East tanker routes and stretching transit times, effectively shrinking the available fleet — freight alone adds about $38.50 a barrel to a 2-million-barrel cargo, forcing some West African sellers to discount at the point of export.

Is Trucking Capacity Coming Back? Why New Capacity Isn't Entering the 2026 Freight Market

As of October 2026, new trucking capacity is not entering the U.S. freight market despite elevated tender rejections. SONAR data puts the Truckload Rejection Index near 14% — roughly triple its 2023–2025 range — while tractors in new for-hire fleets fell to 19,520 in August and the total for-hire fleet shrank by about 51,000 tractors. Rising operating authority counts are "the authority illusion," the report says: an authority is permission to haul, not a truck. ATRI concurs, calling 2026's rate gains a supply-side recovery.

Trucking Capacity Crisis: Rejections Up 4x on Same Volume

The U.S. truckload market is facing an unprecedented capacity crisis, with carriers rejecting loads at roughly four times the normal rate — around 14%, about three times 2023 levels — even as volumes stay flat. Capacity is exiting the market faster than new trucks can enter, driven by rising costs, driver shortages, and regulatory hurdles. FreightWaves says the market will remain tight; shippers and brokers should watch pricing closely.

Class 8 truck orders rise 18% in September as fleets turn to 2027 models

North American Class 8 net orders hit 21,300 units in September, up 18% from August and 3% year over year, as fleets began ordering model-year 2027 equipment ahead of tighter EPA 2027 emissions rules, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence. Year-to-date orders reached 263,499 units, and FTR called underlying demand “fairly solid” on fleet replacement needs, tight capacity, and firmer freight rates. The emissions transition could be costly: nonconformance penalties may add $6,000–$7,000 per truck versus an $8,000–$12,000 upcharge for a fully compliant engine.

U.S. Bank: Contract rates moved higher this summer while spot rates sank

Contract truckload rates rose from $2.30 per mile in June to $2.39 in August while dry van spot rates fell from $2.38 to $2.17 over the same period, leaving contract freight at a roughly $0.22 premium to spot, according to the quarterly U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index produced with DAT. Fuel surcharges climbed from $0.62 to $0.70 per mile, with fuel making up 24% of the broker-to-shipper spot rate by August. Analysts say rising diesel costs are pushing smaller, thin-margin carriers out of the market as trucking emerges from a three-year freight recession.

Truckload's mixed signals

Truckload spot rates are rising quickly even as the volume of contracted loads that carriers actually accept falls, FreightWaves' SONAR Chart of the Week shows. Accepted tender volumes have dropped toward holiday-like lows while tender rejections still hold at 13.8%, an unusual pairing outside a major holiday that points to timing effects or lingering carrier tightness. Clean tanker markets size up impact of potential US diesel export curbs

US restrictions on diesel exports would upend Atlantic Basin clean tanker demand, BRS Shipbrokers warned, just as the global middle-distillate market reels from simultaneous supply shocks in Russia and the Middle East. President Trump had floated a diesel export ban in response to record domestic fuel prices, while Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Sept. 23 the government was studying ways to keep more US-produced diesel at home without a full ban. A full ban could strand about 1.35 million b/d of US Gulf diesel exports — roughly four MR2 cargoes a day — with Europe and Latin America most exposed.

Freight Rates into US Reach Post-Hormuz Crisis Peak — But No Collapse in Sight

Spot rates from the Far East to the US ticked up again on Oct 1, but Xeneta says the market has reached its post-Hormuz crisis peak in 2026. Rates into the US West and East Coast rose only 1.4% and 0.7%, yet remain 344% and 335% above pre-crisis levels of Feb 28. Easing Asian port congestion as typhoon season winds down and China's Golden Week export lull are cooling the market. Xeneta expects no collapse — shippers should budget for elevated freight costs through year-end, with East Coast rates likely falling harder.

Port Congestion Ties Up 12% of Global Container Shipping Capacity

Roughly 12% of global container ship capacity is currently absorbed by port congestion, the highest level in four years, according to C.H. Robinson's October Edge Report. Congestion across East Asia, Northern Europe, and the Indian Subcontinent is cutting the capacity actually available to shippers, even as underlying vessel supply remains healthy. The ocean freight market is fragmenting into Q4: trans-Pacific services face cuts around China's Golden Week, India–North America lanes stay constrained by Colombo disruptions, and Asia–Europe pricing is softening.

Xeneta: Shippers want short-term deals as demand squeezes capacity

Global airfreight volumes rose 6% year-on-year in September while capacity grew just 2%, pushing Xeneta's dynamic load factor to 62% and lifting spot rates 27% above last year. With demand outpacing capacity, most shippers are refusing long-term deals: 60% of new Q3 contracts run three months or less versus 25% a year ago, and contracts over 12 months have all but disappeared. Shippers increasingly want floating mechanisms with base rates adjusted to market conditions.
