Panama Canal Revises Transit Booking System and Updates NetZero Program Requirements

The Panama Canal has revised how canceled or newly available transit slots are reallocated during booking periods 1A and 2 at the Neopanamax locks, restoring the criteria used before July 2026. Available slots will go through a special allocation process prioritizing container ships, then LNG, LPG, and vehicle carriers, with Transit TEU Allowance as the tiebreaker. The same advisory updates NetZero program eligibility, allowing preliminary tonnage inspections outside Panama from November 1, 2026.

Shipping Strikes In Hormuz Leave Both Sides With Economic Pain

As the US threatens renewed attacks against Iran, Tehran's intermittent strikes on commercial vessels have locked both sides in a painful economic standoff. The US blockade has choked Iran's oil-export revenue, while shipping risk through the Strait of Hormuz keeps fuel prices high even though shipments remain at about 80% of prewar levels. Shippers and carriers on Middle East trades face sustained cost and insurance pressure.

Taiwan Says China Harassing Shipping With East Coast Patrol

Taiwan's Coast Guard said on Nov 1 that China's Coast Guard is harassing shipping with its latest patrol off Taiwan's east coast and trying to exert a fictional jurisdiction, adding it sent its own ships to keep watch. China has stepped up activity off Taiwan's east coast since June, and Taipei believes Beijing is practising for a potential maritime blockade using overlapping military, paramilitary and civilian assets. For shippers and carriers on Taiwan Strait and East Asia routes, route risk, insurance and diversion costs bear close watching.

Iran's IRGC Navy Says Four Tankers Catch Fire In Strait Of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy said four oil tankers caught fire and exploded in the Strait of Hormuz while using what it called unauthorised routes, with one tanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude reportedly hitting a mine. UKMTO separately reported a crude tanker struck by an unknown projectile about 40 nautical miles south of Lavan Island, with the crew safe, though it is unclear if it is among the four. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Iranian claims; with about a fifth of global oil supplies passing through the strait, shippers should watch for rerouting, delays and higher war-risk costs.

Port Strike Spreads to 113 Ports in 22 Countries, Testing Supply Chains

Dockworkers and seafarers staged an International Day of Action on October 30 across 113 ports in 22 countries, protesting the use of civilian port infrastructure to move arms to conflict zones and demanding better pay, shorter hours and safety protections. Disruptions were documented in Greece, where Piraeus and six other ports suspended cargo and ferry operations, while participation elsewhere ranged from partial stoppages to demonstrations. Organizers estimate more than 40% of Mediterranean container traffic could be affected, so shippers should watch for delays and diversions — though those figures are the organizers' estimates, not confirmed volumes held up.

Grimaldi Warns U.S. Port Fees Could Force Ships Out of American Trades

Italian shipping giant Grimaldi Group has warned that reinstating U.S. port fees on foreign-built vehicle carriers could force it to redeploy vessels away from American trades. In an October 30 filing with USTR, the company backed extending the Section 301 fee suspension through January 9, 2027, and called for a permanent suspension. Grimaldi said 86% of the cargo it carries in U.S. trades is tied to American automakers, so the fees would hit U.S. exporters and carmakers first.

Tanker Hit by Limpet Mines in Strait of Hormuz as New Threat to Shipping Emerges

The crew is safe, the fire was extinguished with no environmental impact, and the tanker has resumed its voyage. Identified as LOUISE 1, the incident is the first reported successful limpet-mine attack on merchant shipping in the strait since the war began in February, adding a new threat for shippers routing through the waterway.

Newbuildings head for Asia-Latin America trades as volumes boom

Container ship newbuildings delivered in the past week have mostly been deployed on Far East-Latin America services, underscoring booming volumes on those trades. Imabari delivered the 13,932 teu ONE Symphony for ONE's Asia-west coast South America AX3 service, run jointly with MSC and Hapag-Lloyd, while MSC took the 10,300 teu MSC Licia X for its solo Far East-east coast South America Carioca loop. The concentration of new tonnage on Asia-Latin America routes points to more capacity, and shifting schedule and rate options, for shippers on those lanes.

Carriers' November rate hikes 'doomed' say analysts, as demand goes flat

Container spot rates on the transpacific eastbound trade suffered their steepest weekly fall since June 2025, with Shanghai–Los Angeles down 6% to $7,514 per 40ft and Shanghai–New York down 5% to $9,631. With US ocean import volumes forecast to fall 11% month on month in November, analysts say carriers' 1 November general rate increases of $2,000–$3,000 per 40ft are effectively doomed. Asia–Europe rates were flat, but discounting to fill ships suggests shippers should hold off locking in before the next FAK round on 15 November.

MSC and Zim are switching their joint Asia–US East Coast service from a Cape of Good Hope routing back to the shorter Suez Canal transit, the latest sign of Far East services gradually returning to the Suez route. The move cuts transit time and releases capacity that the longer routing had absorbed, which should add supply on USEC lanes and put downward pressure on spot rates. A full unwinding of the Cape diversions still depends on lasting security improvements in the Red Sea.

It is launching a new transhipment-only Asia-Mediterranean loop, AE18/SE5, calling Shanghai, Xiamen, Tanjung Pelepas, Algeciras and Tangier, with the first sailing leaving Shanghai on 22 November. A full Red Sea/Suez restoration would return Asia-Europe transit times and capacity to normal, reshaping shippers' routing and rate strategies.

Ukraine Talks with Turkey, India, Egypt Over Grain Corridor

Ukraine is in talks with Turkey, Egypt and India about reopening civil navigation in the Black Sea. The three countries have proposed that vessels flying their flags sail safely into both Ukrainian and Russian ports to move food cargoes. The corridor is Ukraine's main grain export route — about 40 million tons per season — but shipments stopped in August amid Russian attacks on ports and ships.

Iran Urges US To Accept Proposal To Reopen Strait Of Hormuz

Iran's foreign minister says its offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days is still on the table, Reuters reported. The proposal follows tanker attacks and the sinking of a Singapore-flagged container ship that disrupted traffic through the vital waterway. A reopening would relieve pressure on tanker and container rates; shippers and carriers should track the negotiations closely.

Iran's Guards Say Two Tankers Hit Mines In Strait Of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy said Saturday that two oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, each reportedly carrying about 2 million barrels of crude. State media said the vessels had switched off their positioning systems and used an unauthorized route; there is no independent confirmation. The incident deepens the ongoing Hormuz crisis that has already pushed global energy prices and inflation higher.

Xeneta: Carriers Accelerate Red Sea Return With Offered Capacity Doubling In Six Weeks

Container shipping's return to the Red Sea is accelerating, with weekly scheduled capacity crossing Bab el-Mandeb doubling in six weeks to 448,273 TEU on October 5, according to Xeneta. That is still only 48% of the August 2023 level before diversions around the Cape of Good Hope, but the pace signals a major strategic shift by carriers. Xeneta warns shippers the released capacity will flow back into the global fleet and be one of the key drivers of ocean freight markets heading into 2027.

Container carriers adjust rates, add services to Americas, continue gradual return to Suez

Global container carriers are raising rates on select trade lanes and adding port calls on services to the Americas, while a gradual return to the Suez Canal is shortening India–US East Coast transit times. CMA CGM will increase rates between Oceania and the Americas. With capacity still tight late in the peak season, US shippers should lock in space and revisit rate clauses before the hikes take effect.

Middle East conflict: Fresh tanker attacks slam Middle East transit channels

More oil tankers and commercial vessels have come under attack while attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, keeping Brent crude prices elevated. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported a containership sustained minor damage after being attacked during an inbound transit. The escalation threatens one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, likely pushing freight rates and marine insurance higher and rippling through global supply chains.

Oil Shipping Costs Spike, Lifting Prices from Pump to Grocery

A VLCC sailing from the US to Japan will cost $81 million this November — nine times the $9.1 million it cost last year — as conflict-driven tanker rates soar. Shipping now accounts for more than 40% of the price of US oil, up from 7% on average in 2025, and every $10-per-barrel increase in shipping costs adds about 23 cents per gallon to gasoline, according to the Baker Institute. Analysts warn the sustained cost pass-through will keep lifting prices from the pump to the grocery store, with import-reliant countries like India, the Philippines and Indonesia bearing the brunt.

Why Maritime Cybersecurity Is Becoming an Operational Priority

Digitalization is transforming how ships, ports, offshore platforms, and logistics networks operate, with navigation, cargo handling, propulsion, communications, and maintenance increasingly connected. Those links boost efficiency and visibility but also expose maritime operations to ransomware, supply-chain compromise, navigation interference, and attacks on operational technology. Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT concern — it has become an operational priority for ports and carriers, where a single incident can idle terminals and strand cargo.

Deliveries Are Still Being Delayed As Container Freight Rates Fluctuate

Asia–Europe container rates have plunged about 43% since July — Drewry's Shanghai–Genoa spot fell from $6,463 to $3,702 per 40ft — but Sogese's October update warns deliveries are still being delayed. Xeneta data show global schedule reliability at just 27% in September, with only 4% of Far East–Europe arrivals on time and average delays of 9.9 days. Suez Canal routings are restoring effective capacity, yet congestion at Shanghai and Ningbo erodes much of the sailing-time gain. Importers should plan on total landed cost and realistic arrival windows, not the quoted ocean rate alone.

Maersk's October North America market update shows North Europe capacity to North America returning to normal this month, but spot space will stay limited — book at least three weeks ahead. TA2 will likely fill as volumes rise, and Canada's East Coast stays tight as low water levels limit cargo per vessel. Mediterranean-to-Houston bookings are now open with a three-week lead time.

Iran Says US Response To Its Proposal To Reopen Hormuz Was 'Insufficient'

Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei said on Sunday that the US response to Tehran's seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was 'insufficient', adding that Tehran would neither open the waterway nor negotiate until the conditions are met. Iran had proposed restoring normal maritime passage within seven days if the US agreed; Washington replied via Qatari intermediaries. The stalemate prolongs a conflict that began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February, keeping oil and LNG tanker routes through the strait — the conduit for a fifth of the world's supply — under severe disruption.

Tankers Are on Fire After Multiple Attacks

Shipbroker Gibson says tanker attacks in the Middle East hit their highest levels since the war began last week, and that pace has continued this week. While tanker rates are exploding once again, the ships and their crews have never been in more danger. Importers and forwarders should brace for war-risk premiums and schedule disruption on crude and product tanker routes.

Global VLCC Spot Earnings Rise to $805,000/Day, Clarksons Says

Crude tanker markets hit fresh all-time highs, with VLCCs averaging $805,000/day globally and freight at $20-45/bbl (US Gulf-China at $37.5/bbl vs $5/bbl in 2025), Clarksons Research said in its Oct 9 weekly recap. At least 10 ships (1.0m GT) have been damaged in the Middle East in October, and a cumulative ~2 billion barrels of crude have failed to transit Hormuz. The spike is lifting landed costs for importers and straining freight budgets across supply chains.

Drewry: Intra Asia Container Index Down 1%

Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index slipped 1% this week to $1,503 per 40ft container, ending a six-week climb, as Golden Week holidays weakened demand across the region. Spot rates from Shanghai to Manila, Laem Chabang and Yokohama fell 3%, and Hapag-Lloyd suspended new bookings to Philippine ports amid congestion and empty-container shortages. With vessel waiting times reaching 74 hours at Shanghai and 58 hours at Ningbo, Drewry expects rates to hold broadly stable as volumes recover after the holidays.

Maersk Europe Market Update October 2026

Maersk's October market update points to post-Golden Week supply-chain adjustments as Chinese factories resume full production, urging shippers to review inventory positions and secure capacity early. The EU's revised Union Customs Code was published in September and will apply from September 2027, introducing a new EU Customs Authority, a Customs Data Hub and a 'Trust and Check' self-declaration scheme. Air freight demand stays resilient into year-end, driven by semiconductors and data-centre equipment, while rail services through the Port of Valencia are disrupted until 7 November.

Port of Los Angeles Sets All-Time Monthly Cargo Record

The Port of Los Angeles handled 1,042,652 TEUs in September, the busiest month in its 118-year history and more than 20,000 units above the previous monthly record set in July 2025. The record month capped the busiest quarter in port history, with nearly 3 million TEUs crossing its docks. Importers, forwarders and 3PLs should watch for yard congestion, chassis shortages and anchorage pressure in San Pedro Bay.

More Tankers Hit in Hormuz as U.S. Strikes Cargo Ship

Two more tankers were struck by unidentified projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, while U.S. Central Command disabled the Panama-flagged cargo vessel Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman on October 10. Attacks on commercial shipping are now reaching beyond the strait into the Persian Gulf, marking a sharp escalation. With roughly a fifth of global seaborne energy trade transiting Hormuz, shippers should brace for higher war-risk premiums, rerouting and delays.

South Korea Completes Arctic-Europe Maritime Commercial Voyage

A South Korean container ship, PanStar Acro, completed the country's first commercial round trip to Europe via the Arctic, sailing from Busan on August 22 and returning 50 days later after calls at Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Gdansk. Seoul says the Arctic route could cut voyage times by about a third, with regular services targeted by 2030. The trial carried only 737 TEU against a 1,300 TEU target, and schedule reliability remains the key hurdle.

Back to Suez – Why the rush?

Container lines are returning to the Suez Canal faster than Drewry projected, but the economics look thin: a 24,000 TEU ship saves only about $1 million per round-voyage — $43 per slot — versus the Cape, and a 0.3% war-risk premium alone would tip the advantage back to the Cape of Good Hope. The real drivers are time value, vessel utilisation, schedule integrity and competitive pressure, since a Suez return offers materially faster transits at a similar price. Drewry now assumes a phased return starting July/August 2026, reaching 80% of pre-diversion levels by February 2027.

The Drewry World Container Index fell 2% to $4,351 per 40ft container, driven by weaker demand on Transpacific and Asia-Europe routes during China's Golden Week. Shanghai-Los Angeles rates dropped 3% to $7,624 and Shanghai-New York fell 2% to $10,220 per 40ft box. War-Diverted Traffic Is Reshaping NEOM's Port. What Happens If Hormuz Reopens?

Windward data shows war-diverted traffic has reshaped Saudi Arabia's Port of NEOM: bulk carrier calls jumped from one to 25 between May and September 2026, with many vessels lingering for weeks as discharged cargo awaits rerouting, while container calls have been zero since mid-July. If Hormuz transits recover, the bulk boom will likely fade quickly; if the security environment persists, the port's new container terminal — expected to open by end-2026 — could begin attracting trial calls.

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index fell for a fifth straight session on Friday, dropping about 2.2% to 3,002 points — its lowest since August 25 — and posting a weekly loss of over 7%. The capesize index, covering 150,000-ton iron ore and coal cargoes, slipped 4% to 4,638 points, its lowest since August 21, while the panamax and supramax segments edged up slightly. The pullback signals softer dry bulk demand, though shippers should watch whether the weakness spreads beyond the capesize segment.

El Niño is firmly established with the Oceanic Niño Index above 2 and is expected to last at least until February, putting Brazilian soybean yields at risk — Mato Grosso, which grows 29% of Brazil’s soybeans, typically sees 4–5% yield losses in El Niño years. Panama Canal restrictions have cut daily transits from 36 to 32 vessels, forcing US Gulf-to-China grain voyages onto a 53-day alternative route versus 35 days via Panama and potentially raising North American export costs by up to 50%, while China has bought just over 10 million tonnes of US soybeans against a 25-million-tonne commitment.

Xeneta: US-bound container rates peak, but sharp collapse unlikely

Asia–U.S. container spot rates have likely peaked following the Hormuz crisis, but will remain elevated through 2026, an analyst at Xeneta says. A sharp collapse in rates is unlikely. For U.S. importers and 3PLs, near-term replenishment stays expensive, making long-term contract coverage the safer play.

India eyes regional hub role as Middle East transshipment demand broadens

Ocean carriers are increasingly using Indian west coast terminals to relay Middle East-bound cargo originating in the US, Europe and Africa, according to the Journal of Commerce. The shift extends the region’s transshipment evolution beyond Asia-Persian Gulf trades, positioning India as an emerging regional hub for Middle East-bound freight.

Capacity conundrum for shippers as carriers unveil post-Golden Week blanks

With China's Golden Week holiday under way, shippers are calculating post-holiday shipping capacity out of Asia. Drewry's Cancelled Sailings tracker shows 39 blanked sailings announced for weeks 41–45 across the three east-west deepsea trades, half of them on the transpacific. Yet Sea-Intelligence notes blanking levels are unseasonally low for the post-pandemic era — a capacity-management strategy that has helped keep transpacific spot rates elevated for two months.

Suez return a major threat to carrier efforts to halt transpac spot rate slide

TEU-mile demand growth has regressed for the first time since January, as carriers blanked sailings during China's Golden Week, newbuild deliveries piled up, and more vessels returned to the Suez Canal on Asia-Europe routes. According to consultancy Linerlytica, the Suez return is the biggest threat to carriers' efforts to reverse a three-month slide in spot rates. US importers may see further rate softness in the near term, but should watch for schedule reliability swings.

Five Hormuz Incidents Reported Monday as Tanker Attacks Mount

UK Maritime Trade Operations reported five separate incidents involving commercial shipping in or near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, including four tanker attacks and one in which Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps threatened another vessel. The latest strike hit a tanker's engine room with an unknown projectile Monday afternoon, sparking a fire the crew was still fighting when UKMTO issued its warning. No casualties or environmental impact had been reported. Shippers should brace for volatility in Middle East routing costs and war-risk surcharges.

Coast Guard Proposes Dropping Six Mariner Training Requirements

The U.S. Coast Guard has published a notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register to eliminate six training and competency requirements for certain Merchant Mariner Credential endorsements. The targeted rules include leadership and managerial skills training for masters of sub-500 GT near-coastal vessels and bridge resource management training for certain navigational watch officers. The Coast Guard says the requirements exceed minimum international STCW standards and impose unnecessary costs on American mariners.

FMC questions Cosco on non-payment of reparations to ag shipper

The Federal Maritime Commission has ordered Cosco Shipping to explain why it has not paid reparations to an Oregon-based agricultural shipper, questioning whether the carrier intentionally ignored the ruling. If the non-payment is found 'willful and knowing,' Cosco faces fines of up to $25,000 a day. The case signals to shippers that FMC reparations orders carry real enforcement teeth.

Hackers Breached Propulsion System of US-Bound Oil Tanker

FBI and US Coast Guard investigators have found evidence that hackers accessed the propulsion system of an oil supertanker as it approached the Texas coast this summer, US officials said. The agencies also boarded two US-bound commercial vessels in the Gulf of Mexico last month after signs their computer networks were breached. The incidents highlight how cyberattacks are beginning to reach ships' physical control systems; separately, the nation's busiest container port said it fended off more than 120 million cyberattack attempts in August.

Ocean Freight Risk: Late Is Now the Likely Outcome

WiseTech's newly launched Ocean Freight Risk Outlook shows September reliability deteriorating on the Asia-North America trade lane, where late delivery is now the most likely outcome. The report argues the defining risk is degrading carrier execution and reliability, not capacity, and that carrier selection matters more than lane selection heading into peak season. The fallout extends to downstream drayage, truckload and spot exposure, and total landed cost.

Hapag-Lloyd's Zim takeover heads for reset as Israel requires new review

Hapag-Lloyd's $4.2 billion acquisition of Zim Integrated Shipping Services is in limbo after Israel's Government Companies Authority ended its review of the original transaction structure, requiring a materially revised proposal to go through a new review process. The companies still hope to close the deal in late 2026, but Israeli maritime-security requirements and a new shareholder challenge have clouded the path. Zim shareholders have already approved the all-cash merger at $35 per share; closing remains contingent on Israeli government clearances, including the consent tied to the state's 'golden share'.

Divide between Asia-US and Asia-Europe rates at historic levels

The gap between container spot rates from Asia to North America and those to Europe has reached historic levels, with Sea-Intelligence warning the arbitrage could persist for several months. Drawing on Drewry WCI weekly spot data going back to May 2012, the consultancy found the Asia-to-US east coast premium over North Europe at $7,026 per 40ft — more than double the previous record of $3,179 set in June 2021 — while Asia-Europe prices keep falling as transpacific rates rise. Carriers may eventually redeploy vessels to narrow the gap, but such shifts take time, and precedent suggests the imbalance could stay elevated for months.

Panama Canal to add transit slot on 15 Oct, immediately raise draft restrictions to 49 feet

The Panama Canal Authority will add a daily transit slot on 15 October, raising the total to 33, and has immediately raised the maximum authorized draft for the neopanamax locks to 49 feet from 48.5 feet. The easing follows improved water levels in Gatun Lake, now slightly above the 10-year average. It restores carrying capacity on the primary Asia-US Gulf and East Coast trade lane, where more than 76% of transiting cargo has the US as origin or destination. The Authority is also preparing for a developing El Nino that could squeeze rainfall again in 2027.

Middle East Crude Oil Exports Exceed Pre-War Levels But Attacks Increase

Crude oil exports from the Middle East rose above pre-war levels on four of the seven days in the final week of September, Reuters reported on Oct 5, citing shipping data. At the same time, attacks on tankers continue to rise, keeping war-risk premiums and rerouting costs elevated. For US logistics operators, the export rebound offers freight capacity relief, but persistent security risks mean fuel and insurance costs stay volatile heading into peak season.

Where freight forwarders actually lose money

Freight forwarders often close a 'clean' month only to watch margins come in light — the leaks are demurrage never passed to customers, carrier overcharges paid without question, and amendment fees absorbed silently. Portcast CEO Nidhi Gupta argues that with one operator juggling 50-120 live shipments across ports and carriers with different free-time rules, manual invoice checks will always miss things. The answer is not another dashboard but flagging the handful of shipments where a charge is about to be incurred, early enough to act.

Asia-US container rates rise, could be at peak; liquid chem tanker rates ex-USG tick higher

Asia-US container rates climbed again this week, with West Coast rates at $7,550–8,400/FEU and East Coast at $9,600–12,000/FEU — near mid-2022 highs. Xeneta's Peter Sand says the market has likely reached its post-Iran-war peak, up 344% to the West Coast and 335% to the East Coast since the war began, though he does not expect a collapse: his year-end forecast is $6,000–$7,000/FEU to the East Coast and $4,500–$5,500 to the West. Drewry expects downward pressure as blanked sailings ease and Golden Week curbs cargo volumes, while Freightos warns Far East port congestion — which could take 10 months to fully unwind — will keep costs elevated.

Container rates from Asia to the US ran higher this week — $7,550-8,400/FEU to the West Coast and $9,600-12,000/FEU to the East Coast, near mid-2022 highs — as carriers manage capacity through blank sailings. Xeneta chief analyst Peter Sand says the market has likely reached its post-Hormuz-crisis peak but won't collapse, forecasting year-end spot rates of $6,000-$7,000 to the East Coast and $4,500-$5,500 to the West Coast. Freightos warns Asian port congestion may take 10 months to unwind, keeping a higher rate floor even through softer demand.

Russia attacked a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in a Black Sea port in Ukraine's Odesa region on Oct 3, killing one person and injuring three, with 13 other crew evacuated to safety, Ukraine's sea ports administration said. Moscow has effectively renewed its blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports since the summer, disrupting trade routes and slashing grain and steel exports. Freight Rates into US Reach Post-Hormuz Crisis Peak — But No Collapse in Sight

Spot rates from the Far East to the US ticked up again on Oct 1, but Xeneta says the market has reached its post-Hormuz crisis peak in 2026. Rates into the US West and East Coast rose only 1.4% and 0.7%, yet remain 344% and 335% above pre-crisis levels of Feb 28. Easing Asian port congestion as typhoon season winds down and China's Golden Week export lull are cooling the market. Xeneta expects no collapse — shippers should budget for elevated freight costs through year-end, with East Coast rates likely falling harder.

Carriers plan rate hikes on Asia-ECSA trade amid service changes

Container carriers plan to raise rates on Asia to East Coast South America (ECSA) services in the coming weeks as service changes take effect. But forwarders and analysts doubt whether the hikes will stick: spot rates have been sliding from a two-year peak hit at the beginning of September, and seasonal cargo demand remains soft. Port Congestion Ties Up 12% of Global Container Shipping Capacity

Roughly 12% of global container ship capacity is currently absorbed by port congestion, the highest level in four years, according to C.H. Robinson's October Edge Report. Congestion across East Asia, Northern Europe, and the Indian Subcontinent is cutting the capacity actually available to shippers, even as underlying vessel supply remains healthy. The ocean freight market is fragmenting into Q4: trans-Pacific services face cuts around China's Golden Week, India–North America lanes stay constrained by Colombo disruptions, and Asia–Europe pricing is softening.

Pressure on India-US trades as Colombo becomes a transhipment hot-spot

Colombo's rise as a transhipment hub is adding cost pressure on the India-US tradelane, as vessels rerouting away from Middle East hubs amid the US-Iran conflict collide with yard density above 130%. Hapag-Lloyd warned customers of two-to-three-day waits over the coming weeks, and CH Robinson cautioned that South India cargo routed via Colombo risks missing onward connections when mainline services skip the port to recover schedules. With delays expected well into October, shippers must watch feeder timing and transhipment dwell time — not just slot allocation.
