Sanctioned ships taking Nicaraguan numbers are doing it near Hormuz
Between 1 August and 26 September, 10 sanctioned vessels switched to a Nicaraguan MMSI, and 8 of them were first heard on the new identity in waters around the Strait of Hormuz, according to HullCipher tracking data. The nine-digit MMSI is how ports, insurers and cargo buyers screen ships against sanctions lists; DANUTA I, for example, reappeared as "NAUTILUS I" on MMSI 350641000 some 26 nm from the strait on 26 September. The eight-week window recorded 23 identity changes across 19 ships, underscoring how aggressively the shadow fleet is re-flagging to evade enforcement - and adding compliance risk for charterers and cargo buyers.
