Despite economic indicators pointing to a soft 2026, the breakbulk market has stayed strong thanks to busy US carriers, attendees at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges Breakbulk Summit were told. Uncertainty over green fuels has yet to dent demand, showing the segment's resilience.
The breakbulk fleet is set to grow faster, but effective capacity for project cargo and breakbulk shippers remains constrained. Vessel specialization, low demolition activity, port congestion and ongoing disruptions to traditional trade lanes are all limiting the tonnage actually available. Tight conditions in this niche look set to persist in the near term.
