SDS Files: Do You Really Need One for Every SKU?
Two years ago I walked a 3PL warehouse in Fresno for a compliance check. The warehouse manager proudly pulled a thick binder out of a drawer and told me, "We have an SDS for every SKU." I flipped through it: toy instruction manuals, a carton supplier's product brochure, even a stack of sample shipping labels. The SDSs for the actual paint thinner, lithium batteries, and cleaning solvents on the floor? Not a single one. Here's the bottom line up front: no, you don't need an SDS for every SKU — but miss one you actually need, and an OSHA citation will hurt. When it comes to compliance, I'd rather you skip the carton brochure than miss the SDS for a bottle of industrial cleaner.
