Selling Automation Equipment into Europe? Nail Down Two Things First: Your Authorized Representative and Your Technical File
In 2024 I sat in on negotiations where a US importer was buying a batch of four-way shuttle systems from China. Price was agreed, lead time was fine. Before signing I asked one extra question: where is the CE technical file, and who is your EU Authorized Representative? The salesperson froze. "We already have the CE certificate," he said. He sent it over — a self-declaration from a domestic outfit, no notified-body number anywhere. And the Authorized Representative? "The goods ship to Rotterdam, the customer clears customs, right?" That deal died — not on price, but because the equipment couldn't legally be sold in Europe at all.
