Where each symbology fits
| Symbology | Typical use |
|---|---|

| Code 39 | Best compatibility with legacy scanners; automotive and defense still use it. Uppercase and digits only. |
| EAN-13 | The retail barcode for Europe and the Americas — required for supermarket shelves. |
| EAN-8 | Short version of EAN-13 for small packages. |
| UPC-A | The US retail standard barcode, 12 digits. |
| UPC-E | Compressed UPC for small packages. |
| ITF-14 | Outer-case barcode printed on corrugated cartons, 14 digits. |
| Codabar | Still used by libraries, blood banks and some carriers; must start and end with A–D. |
| QR Code | URLs, business cards, equipment checklists — any phone can scan it, and it survives 30% damage. |
| Data Matrix | Tiny-part marking and medical-device UDI — readable even laser-etched grain-of-rice small. |
| PDF417 | ID cards, boarding passes, multi-line logistics data — holds over a thousand characters. |
| Aztec Code | Train tickets and airline baggage tags — no finder pattern needed for fast scanning. |
