European postal operators gear up for surge in holiday volume

Norway's Posten Bring has added hundreds of parcel lockers, upgraded 300 existing ones, and opened its largest parcel terminal, handling more than 500,000 parcels a day, ahead of record holiday volumes — August locker deliveries already beat last Christmas's record. In Germany, Deutsche Post will add more than 500 parcel stations, hire over 10,000 temporary workers, and run about 9,500 delivery routes in peak weeks, making early pickup key to avoiding holiday delays.

Ofcom: Royal Mail's financial position is stark

UK regulator Ofcom has warned that Royal Mail's financial position is "stark", as declining letter volumes per delivery round push up the cost of each letter and threaten the universal postal service. Ofcom proposes extending the current Second Class safeguard price cap, set in 2024 and expiring in March 2027, by one year while it consults on a long-term pricing approach. The move signals possible further UK postage increases for parcel and postal operators.

CWU: Royal Mail stands "on the brink of collapse"

The Communication Workers Union has called for an emergency summit between the government, Royal Mail management and union leaders to rescue the carrier from "serious crisis." The CWU blames more than a decade of structural decline and a self-inflicted recruitment and retention crisis, warning that the continuing failure to deliver quality of service is killing the brand — while BBC reports raise the prospect of a "nightmare Christmas."

Royal Mail to cut up to 2,500 staff

Royal Mail plans to cut up to 2,500 roles as it pushes to reduce costs and remove duplication across the business, CEO Alistair Cochrane said. The cuts would be achieved through natural attrition and voluntary redundancy, with no compulsory layoffs and no reductions in frontline delivery or processing roles. The company has briefed unions CWU and Unite and formal consultation is underway.

Bpost to raise postage and parcel rates from January

Bpost will raise stamp and parcel rates from 1 January 2027, citing structurally declining mail volumes — down 14.3% in Q1 2026 — and rising costs. The increase costs the average household about EUR 0.17 per month, with the carrier steering customers toward cheaper options like Non Prior mail and buying stamps in sheets. An additional inflation-linked adjustment of up to 3% may follow during 2027.
