Report: Walmart's Shipping Boxes Are Too Tall for Its Warehouse Robots
Walmart's multibillion-dollar warehouse automation push is colliding with a packaging problem: shipping boxes used for more than two decades are too tall for its robots, so the retailer plans to switch to boxes 1.5 inches shorter — which must be taped shut by hand, adding labor and cost. Roughly 80% of its ~200 U.S. supply chain buildings are retrofits of 1980s–90s facilities, about 5% of Symbotic's product-moving robots are under repair at any given time, and electricity bills at automated grocery sites can top $800,000 a month. Still, more than 65% of stores were receiving automated freight by August, and executives say the long-term bet is worthwhile.
