China pulls out of port project in Sri Lanka
China Merchants Port Holdings has withdrawn from a $392 million joint venture to develop a logistics hub at Sri Lanka's main seaport in Colombo. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority said the decision followed an assessment of prevailing external circumstances, commercial considerations and shareholder interests, and that it is now seeking a new investor for the 150,000-square-metre project. The stake, agreed in April 2023, had been the first major foreign investment announced after Sri Lanka's economic collapse in 2022; China Merchants already operates a $500m deep-water container terminal at Colombo and the port at Hambantota.
