Pallet Rack Seismic Retrofit in Existing Warehouses: The Anchor-Bolt, Bracing, and Row-Spacer Cost Math
Pallet rack seismic retrofit is a cost problem before it is an engineering problem. A cost analyst walks through the retrofit of existing warehouse racks in earthquake country — anchor bolts, bracing, and row spacers: what each piece of hardware prevents, what IBC, ASCE 7, and ANSI/RMI MH16.1 actually require of storage racks, and the three-way ledger of retrofit cost versus one collapsed bay versus the 10%-25% earthquake insurance deductible. The counter-intuitive findings: the bolts are the cheapest part — the engineer's stamp and the labor cost more — OSHA fines are the cheapest line on the whole table, and because moderate quake losses fall entirely inside the deductible, a seismic retrofit is the only way to transfer that slice of risk.
